Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Performs clinical laboratory testing, recording and reporting according to standard operating procedures, as appropriate.
  • Processes client cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells according to established procedures.
  • Records and assists in maintaining accurate inventory of client cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells in the liquid nitrogen storage tanks.
  • Prepares and properly documents all test specimens referred to reference laboratories.
  • Becomes proficient in newly developed laboratory procedures and testing as related to the processing of cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells.
  • Assists and performs ancillary laboratory procedures for manipulating and testing cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells.
  • Prepares frozen cord or peripheral blood progenitor cells for transfer to another facility as requested.
  • Maintains the general work area in a neat and organized manner to help promote a safe work environment.
  • Conforms to the policies mandated for utilization of all personal protective equipment.
  • Becomes familiar with and adheres to established guidelines for laboratory safety.
  • Reports all safety violations and accidents to the Laboratory Manager/Director, Laboratory Operations for immediate intervention.
  • Assists in providing educational support regarding cord blood processing and storage to inquiring clients and potential clients.

Quality Assurance:

  • Performs quality control procedures on laboratory instruments as scheduled and assigned.
  • Maintains quality control/quality assurance records.
  • Confirms the daily performance of testing procedures through quality control performance in the standard operating procedures.
  • Attends presentations and in-service training sessions as required for continuing education.
  • Attends and participates in in-service training related to the development and performance of new laboratory procedures.
  • Participates in the California Cryobank Stem Cell Services Quality Assurance Program.
  • Maintains accurate laboratory client files according to standard procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with cover for responses to emergency situations related to storage freezers and other monitored equipment.
  • Reports any "out-of-control" results or equipment failures to the immediate supervisor for investigation or repair.
  • Ensures the availability of supplies involved in the performance of laboratory procedures and assist with ordering when necessary.
  • Other duties and projects as required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.), completion of an accredited medical terminology program, and three to five years related experience.

Computer Skills:

  • Knowledge of MS Word and Excel.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
  • Phase-contrast microscopy skills; excellent customer service skills; strong attention to details; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; high level of interpersonal skills to interact with peers and management; excellent organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality; and ability to travel.

Other Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with laboratory and medical terminology; training in the handling of liquid nitrogen.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.
