Los Angeles Biotech Industry Gets A Boost

Move enables California Cryobank, Inc., one of the largest and most prominent reproductive tissue banks in the world, and its subsidiaries, Family Cord Blood Services and California Cryobank Stem Cell Services, to enhance cutting-edge cryogenic services

Saturday, November 05, 2005

Los Angeles (November 2005) - In response to an ever-increasing demand from families for umbilical cord blood storage, stem cell and sperm bank services, California Cryobank (CCB), one of the oldest and largest reproductive tissue banks in the world, together with its subsidiaries, Family Cord Blood Services (FCBS), an umbilical cord blood processing and storage company and California Cryobank Stem Cell Services (CCSCS), a leading provider of professional services to stem cell transplant centers and their patients, announced today their relocation to a company-owned, new state-of-the-art facility in Los Angeles, CA.

"We are committed to our mission of helping to start and protect families, and are excited to be relocating to such an ideal facility. This new and larger building will enable each of our corporate divisions to better serve families' growing reproductive and cord blood banking needs. Our new facility will expand our technological reach and provide us the capacity to grow all of our services to meet the needs of the thousands of families we serve," says Gary Weinhouse, CEO of CCB and subsidiaries.

"Our new facility will help us apply the latest cryogenic technologies and will enhance our ability to provide state of the art resources for our clients. This custom-built facility sets a new standard for similar laboratories around the country," says Dr. Charles Sims, co-founder of CCB and subsidiaries.

"California Cryobank's expansion within Los Angeles County is an acknowledgement of the size and strength of the local bio-medicine industry, but also a vote of confidence in the future of Southern California's economy," says Jack Kyser, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

With more than twice the combined space of the former sperm bank and cord blood laboratories, the "crown jewel" of the facility is the Cryogenic Storage area. This contains the liquid nitrogen storage tanks. It was designed and constructed as a "building within a building" surpassing existing safety and disaster codes. It is divided into two separate spaces. One is for the storage and preservation of reproductive tissues such as sperm, embryos and female reproductive cells. The other for stem cells which include umbilical cord blood stem cells, and other stem cells such as those from bone marrow and peripheral blood. This area is set apart from the rest of the building and can be viewed through a stunning curved glass wall with each storage unit illuminated with special lighting.

With the purchase and reconstruction of this building, the company is expanding its commitment to remaining in Los Angeles, and playing an important role in its growing biotech industry. Said co-founder Dr. Cappy Rothman, "We expect to be able to continue attracting leading scientists and professionals. This will help Los Angeles to remain an important center for our industry."

HOW MANY VIALS DO I NEED?

National averages range from 3-4 insemination cycles per successful pregnancy. We recommend purchasing at least 5 vials per child to guarantee your donor remains available until reaching your personal family goals. Additionally, you get 1 Year FREE storage if you purchase 4 or more vials ($475 value).

WHY SHOULD I THINK ABOUT STORING VIALS?

Our donors sell out and retire quickly! We have thousands of clients forced to choose between a new donor or not having a second child because they chose not to store vials for future use while they were available. To help you plan for your future, we offer 3 Years FREE storage if you purchase 3 Years+ vials ($1,050 value) - as well as the ability to sell back any unused vials that have not left our control.
